I  like when punk still has that homemade feel, if things are too polished it can lose the raw sound that can only happen in one take under less than perfect conditions. Like those home recordings on a four track in the bedroom, if you try to artificially recreate that feel you’ll immediately know it. Something will be different. You can hear it right away with the X-Rays, these guys pulled themselves together just long enough to write a single with alcohol fueling the subject matter and recording session.

If you bought issue #377 of MRR you know that they reviewed all of our last 4 releases at once.  So, we will put them up here, one for each day.

First off is the NV's with Trust Fun Suicide EP

This EP gives us 3 songs of tried and true garage punk.  Poppy, fast, melodic, and sharp.  Just like your favorite MUFFS song.  These guys don't give you anything new; you've probably heard bands play songs just like these ones many times before.  But I don't think this is the kind of music meant for someone looking for something new.  It's meant for people that already know what they want and they want more of it!  And if you are looking for catchy pub-punk with attitude this will be something you like.

Fatal Figures are the members of The Blowtops latest, a band I'm just getting to know also on Big Neck Records. These guys are making it happen in way way western New York where it's winter six months a year. Buffalo was the big city we would occasionally drive to to either go across the border to drink in Canada or go to Darien Lake and see a huge show. I played with someone from Buffalo who would tell me about all kinds of cool shit that was happening and I imagined living there one day. Their latest builds on that garage intensity with some hardcore influences while keeping that raw, live sound.

Madison garage-punk outfit Fire Retarded‘s debut full-length, ‘Scroggz Manor,’ crams a lot more melody, swing, and space into the thwacking frenzy the band has cultivated at its shows and on last year’s ‘High Horse’ EP. (Previously, they’ve teased the album online with “Meat Stairs” and “Nothing Said.”) The relatively new band still centers around guitarist Tyler Fassnacht’s raw, often screamed vocals and drummer Alex Ross’ direct, shambling rhythms. The addition of Hussy member Bobby Hussy on second guitar (full disclosure: Bobby and I work together a bit at MadCity Music Exchange), who also recorded the album, helps to flesh out the approach here, including new versions of two songs from the EP. The album’s closing track, “Overrated Kayak,” is a much bigger surprise, running longer than five minutes to the band’s usual two-minutes-ish, and slowing down for a bit of jangly, sweetly sad power-pop. But for now, I wanted to focus on what the band does with the one minute and 45 seconds of “Brain Burger,” cramming a catchy vocal melody into the verses even as Fassnacht and Hussy’s guitars cultivate a deceptively unstable, messy feel before tightening up for a prodding, shouted chorus. Stream the song above.

‘Scroggz Manor’ is due out in April on Big Neck Records. Fire Retarded’s next show is Saturday, March 22 at the Crystal Corner Bar.

A band who seem intent on trying to be this year’s Old Firm Casuals when it comes to most mentions in The Uber Rock Singles Club are garage punk rock leg-ends The X- Rays. Seemingly not content with just releasing a mighty fine split 7" with The Hip Priests. Gary X-Ray and his bunch of reformed punk rock reprobates return via Big Neck Records with a 3 track pink vinyl 7 " all of their own. 'Jameson Shot' kicks things off in fine form too all squealing guitars and overdriven vocals, this is supershitty punk rock to the max make no mistake.

'Drinking For My Baby' (I’m noticing a them here are you?) on the B side continues the frenzied attack bringing to mind Gary's days spent fronting those Hip Hop Priests. Whilst 'Retaliate Now' the final track here actually has guitarist G-Man conjuring up images of Wayne Kramer at times proving to be a welcome distraction to the usual nonstop chaos the guys conjure up. The X-Rays are back with a bang with this 7", but make sure you get your copy before it’s too late.

Fire Retarded – Scroggz Manor

WHAM! ZWAP! KAPOW! VRONK! !OX?-ETH!

Quel bel assourdissant, Batman!

Fire Retarded plays the kind of music that warrants onomatopoeia cards. It’s second nature to them. And on their debut, Scroggz Manor, you have to imagine a ticker of these wonderful wordnoises running behind of your eyes, twixt your auditory channels....

It has been over a week since the Big Neck Fest 2014 in Buffalo, NY and I think it is time to review.  Before we dive into Day 1 I want to extend my thanks out to Malik Von Saint who set all of this up.  Without him, Buffalo would have been without this festival for another few years.  He organized the nights, took care of the door, governed the money, and got those bands rolling on time (no small feat). So again THANKS MALIK!

Hollywood / Mean Jeans on Big Neck Records

I am old. I'm not just getting old, I'm already there and as I start on the long, slow decline, the best years behind me, I rely more on bands like these guys, Hollywood and Mean Jeans to remind me of the good old days when your liver was brand new and you didn't wake up until noon. You didn't care about living with six other dudes and crates of records doubled as furniture.

Hollywood says "(I Prefer) Drugs" these guys are ready to party, just like that Love Child of a full length...

Don't forget about the Record Release show Wednesday night

http://dcmusicdownload.com/2014/02/24/rising-artists-the-nvs/

D.C.’s punk rock vandals The NVs has charmed the District with its brazen offerings since 2011. The quartet-comprised of vocalist Sal Go, guitarist Scott Wilson, bassist Lucas Oswalt and drummer Nathan Armstrong-recently unveiled a debut EP last fall, and will celebrate its release at DC9 this Wednesday. Before the show, I had the chance to chat with Sal about the group’s start, the new EP and future plans.

Fire Retarded on Gloryhole Records

Heather and Bobby from The Hussy were passing through Brooklyn last week with a little band called Nobunny. It was one of the sold out shows they were playing supporting that bad ass up and down the east coast and even shared the stage with Mr. No at Baby's All Right, I witnessed that freaking debauchery with my own forever scarred eyes. It's awesome to see a band that's been so great from the very first single and I get equally excited when so many other people start to see it too. Why am I even talking about Bobby and the Hussy in this post? Because in addition to running his label, Kind Turkey, Bobby has been recording and mixing his own records and this single from Fire Retarded (which I instinctually spell 'reatarded') he ended up playing guitar on and joined the freaking band for a tour and maybe for good(!) last month. I'm sure the rest of these guys are great too but Bobby's involvement had me reaching to throw this on the turntable the minute I opened it up.

Next up on our list of exciting releases is the Activations.  This is the new power punk band put together by Dan from the Radiobeats.  They have four members, Dan on guitar and vocals, Read on Guitar, TFP on Bass, and Max on drums.

What I love about this band is that they play punk rock with a heavy 70's influence in their songs.  The song, " Why Why Why" has an incredible guitar that brings to mind punk mixed with those early 70's rock bands.  It delivers tough hard chords that drive you into a brick wall over and over.   Its f'n great.

They are having their record release show February 22, 2014 but there debut release from Big Neck will be out in April.

Next on our list of 2014 excitement is the band Fire RetardedBobby Hussy from The Hussy has always proclaimed that he is a punk rocker underneath all of the Hussy's psych filled garage rock.  To the point that he claims to have been raised on the Punk Rock of Big Neck Records from a wee age.  Well he saw Fire Retarded play very early in their career and decided on the spot that he needed to be in the band.  That night they went from a 3 piece to a 4 piece with Bobby on guitar.

Bobby always wanted to release a record on Big Neck, but he didn't want it to be a psych rock record, he wanted to have a Big Neck release that was a real 'punk rock scorcher'. Well Fire Retarded was about to hit the studio when we called to find out if Bobby was ready to make his punk rock scorcher.  Literally a couple days later Bobby was sending me mixes of Fire Retarded's new record "Scroggz Manor."

Well it's the New Year and Big Neck has some very exciting news. Much of our news has to do with our releases that are coming up this year.  The biggest and best news....

Big Neck is releasing Sonny Vincent's new record!  14 exclusive tracks to Big Neck Records.  The record will be released in April 2014 on LP and CD.  It is entitled, "Cyanide Consomme."

This record is blazing hot.  If you think Sonny has slowed down at any point you are mistaken this record has tougher guitar riffs and more hooks than I have heard since The Testors.

Razorcake #77 reviewed Big Neck's Record Store Day compilation!

Various Artists

Big Neck Record Store Day 7" EP

As the titled suggests, this is Big Neck's compilation contribution to this year's Record Store Day Celebration.  Populating the disc are one track each by the Livids, XRays, Cheap Freaks, and Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.  All are fine bits of high-octane garage-influenced punk and I'll go out on a limb and guess the tracks are exclusive to this release--if not, what would be the point then right?  If you dig any of the bands, or just like yer swaggering caboose handed to you by bands meting out raucous rock'n'roll, this is definitely worth the green and the scramble. - Jimmy Alvarado

Hollywood "Love Child" on Big Neck Records

Hollywood are from Baltimore. Hollywood likes those giant shiny letters that spell out ‘Birthday’ so everyone knows it’s your special day. They like heart shaped beds because normal beds are boring and if that bed is covered in shag fabric, it’s for your pleasure. Hollywood lists every track title IN ALL CAPS because they are important and yelling. Hollywood is four guys who play loud fast and hard with a sense of humor because anything else would be completely pretentious.

The opening track, “UP ALL NIGHT” jumps into that huge pop punk sound of thick treble range guitars with an opening anthem, they literally have no choice but to get this off their collective chests. The scratchiest static sound from their guitars with beefy thick fingered chords, palming the whole instrument taking over the track, crashing in waves with macho yelling of vocals back and forth between band members. Hollywood can get away with a completely ridiculous track because they’re playing at such speed, so thoroughly thick and massive it becomes an avalanche of spazzy highs and you’re at the bottom of the hill. Drums and bass take a backseat to this front and center distortion.

Hit the new releases section and buy!  It's awesome.  The guys who made Empty Records a kickass lable back in the day bring their brand of 90's/00's rock and roll to 2013.

3 tracks that have them sounding better than they ever have.

Quote from Terminal Boredom:

"Then the X-Rays show up on this thing for a total Nineties flashback (yes the UK band who did the ‘Double Godzilla With Cheese’ LP), and “Six Pack Style” sounds so much like a vintage New Bomb Turks tune it’s remarkable – I don’t ever remember them sounding this good? I guess they have a new LP coming out soon as well. The Nineties really are back. "

HOLLYWOOD - "Love Child" LP

From the home of the late great Edith Massey comes some brattey '70s inspired punk rock.  At they're best moments they remind me of RED CROSS or GREEN RIVER.  Almost a Seattle grunge throwback at times with shades of 60s punk and 70s glam with one of those singers that I picture with his shirt off, bleedng track marks and who ends every song line with a cat howling eeeeooowwwww! PRETTY GOOD. (RO)

V/A - "Big Neck Record Store Day Compilation" EP

One track each by LIVIDS, XRAYS, CHEAP FREAKS and STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB. LIVIDS come right out of the gate with a driving rager that's got great guitar and just doesn't stop.  It just pulls you in.  XRAYS continue with another one that has got a great guitar sound and is delivered with a great sense of urgency.  I can't imagine the second side will match the intensity of these two.  Turns out I may be wrong.  CHEAP FREAKS slow things down a bit, but they don't slow down the intensity.  SWALTB close things out with a female fronted number, which also includes what sounds like a tamborine...Jezus. And it's got some wicked guitar.  Honestly, this is one of the best compilation EPs I've heard in ages. (KK)

Scott and I rolled into the back room at the Black Cat and immediately the OBN IIIs started laying down some catchy rock n roll riffs.  They were loud, they were agressive, and their songs had dynamic range.  The music was great, the band was killing it, but the real winner was the lead singer Orville....

Hollywood – Love Child (Big Neck)

Look, you have to give it to a band that would introduce the guitar solo by yelling “Guit-tar!”.  You know what you’re in for with Baltimore party rockers Hollywood..  a sweaty dance party and a lot of Angus Youngfacing* over the solos.   So many high-kicks and all-caps!

FATAL FIGURES-Caterwaul (Big Neck, LP)
Most of this band’s membership was in The Blowtops, who hammered out dirty, noisy garage blues churn. There’s still something of that here and they drag their songs through the muck pretty well. The songs that favor a spirited shuffle work best here—“Party Girl,” “Break Me” or “Blue Zed,” the latter song previously appearing on a 2011 single. It’s less-successful for the dragged-out “Wayne Bent” and “New God,” sounding like a musical interpretation of a hangover. Maybe not as much “VROOM” as their previous band (you should check out the Blowtops’ Blackstatic if your curiosity is piqued) but they have the right idea at times.

V/A “Big Neck Record Store Day Compilation” 7”

bigneckrsd

Bart Hart jumps into the RSD game for the first time with this four band compilation with some new acts and some Nineties players as well. The Livids song on this might be my favorite of theirs so far, as “Stop Bleeding” is just straightforward punk blaze with no frills and it goes down with some good burn. Then the X-Rays show up on this thing for a total Nineties flashback (yes the UK band who did the ‘Double Godzilla With Cheese’ LP), and “Six Pack Style” sounds so much like a vintage New Bomb Turks tune it’s remarkable – I don’t ever remember them sounding this good? Rich got around to opening some of the Big Neck Swag we sent him and reviewed a couple items.  Here is the Fatal Figures Review:

Fatal Figures “Caterwaul” LP

fatalfigslp

Late Nineties Buffalo was actually a pretty happening spot in the garage scene, believe it or not. We were home to one of the best labels (Big Neck Records), the preeminent music fest of the day (Rust Belt Revolt), great record stores (Home of Hits and New World Records), great venues (and bookers) that made it easy for touring bands to stop (Sanctuary, Mohawk and others) and some of the finest bands of the era, the Blowtops being one of them. A dozen or so years later, all of those venues and stores are closed, Bart and Big Neck (along with the fest) were run out of town and relocated to Virginia and all the bands from that era have either left the city or broken up. (I should note we had another great run a couple of years ago, but that’s another story…). The Blowtops persevered through it all, closing up shop some five years ago after European and US tours, four or five full lengths and at least a dozen singles.

Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb on Big Neck Records

It really warmed my heart to read that Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb came together when Sal and Mike met at a Jay Reatard show in 2008 and decided to start a band. I like to think in between shows in heaven Jay is looking down at Stop Worrying... and thinking, "Why would these assholes be inspired by my stupid shit?" Well, Jay you can definitely hear the loud and fast influence and pop punk timings while keeping things short and simple, jamming those chords into a tight structure with no room for psych jam time. So shut it. One more question, the Shattered Records club is totally over right?

Hollywood on Big Neck Records

http://7inches.blogspot.com/

I remember when John Spencer Blues Explosion seemed to lead the way into something I didn’t know existed: the blown out, garage-soul, joke blues. Up until that point the blues was very serious, sad business from Robert Johnson and to combine it with wrestling ring ostentatiousness, distorted grooves and James Brown soul felt completely new. Hollywood, out of Baltimore, MD feel like an extension of that moment when you realize you don’t have to be in a band that’s trying so hard to be cool or serious or political…if you like to get drunk and listen to loud music while being a jackass, then you should do that. Just be your god damn self, that’s what’s going to work in the end. Hollywood are a bunch of jokers, blasting scuzzy distortion all over the stage and if you stop for half a second to listen to their lyrics then they’ll have you pissing your pants.

Cheap Freaks "Play Four Songs" on Big Neck Records

http://7inches.blogspot.com/

Even in the Internet age it seems rare to hear about garage-punk bands on the other side of the ocean. There are pockets of singles I hear about occasionally on France’s Les Disques Steak or Atelier Ciseaux, but I can't remember the last time I heard raw stripped down punk pop coming out of Dublin from The Cheap Freaks. Bass guitar/vocalist Robbie Brady from The Things got together with guitarist/vocalist Alan Dodd a few years back and this single was recorded back in 2009 and is just hitting shelves now a couple years later. This direction is an early loud and scuzzy start that could instantly belong in any number of contemporary scenes.

Best Freeby and Best Demo of the Week

Birthday Suits – Wonderland America

The Birthday Suites were doing an East Coast Tour last week (thank god some bands still believe in the east coast) and made a stop in DC.  For all that do not know who the Birthday Suits are, they are Hideo and Mathew from Sweet JAP fame and they are the most awesome two people on this earth.  Not only are they the nicest guys I have ever met, but when they are playing live you have never heard or seen two people play so LOUD and put on such a sensory overloaded show.  In short they kick everyone’s ass.  I mean that.  I went to the show and hung out with the both of them and Hideo gave me a copy of their new single out on Asian Man Records!

Me and the Boys

There are only three two piece bands that I have ever liked in history, Bantam Rooster was the very first and it was Tom Potter that introduced me to the idea that two people could carry the stage and a full set of songs.  It was the Birthday Suits who introduced me to the idea that two guys could create a wall of noise, nay a barrage of rock, no a Tsunami of Sound!  They are amazing because they sound like a full band and in their new single, they do not disappoint.  Great guitar hooks with Hideo’s voice lacing the song throughout with chorus after chorus.  Mathew’s drumming just never ceases, Dave Grohl would stop and gaze in wonder at the abilities of Mathew and how he beats the hell out of his kit and just plain creates a beat that you can literally feel changing your heart rhythm.  These three songs do not disappoint and I whole heartedly recommend pick this up ASAP.

Best Demo of the Week:

Well speaking of Tom Potter…

Aaron Aducci (ex-Blowtops) called me a couple months ago and told me that the Fatal Figures wanted to do something different.  His idea was to bring Tom Potter in from Detroit for a weekend write a bunch of songs and then go record with the infamous Jim Diamond.  I laughed a little, but they did it.  Tom came, they wrote and they went to Diamonds.  Before the trip to Detroit, Scott the drummer for the Fatal Figures ended up with a bit of a health issue, so he could not make it to record.  Thank god the drummer from the infamous garage rock band The Dirtys was available to record with them.  They pumped out 9 great tunes where Tom sings on 4 songs, Aaron on 3 and Tracy on 2.

You can definitely tell the difference, Tom’s songs are slightly more to the straight ahead punk rock side and brings to mind a cross between the full rock sound of the Chrome Spiders with the speed and anger of Bantam Rooster – so good.  I have always loved Aaron as a lead singer and he does not disappoint, singing three song ala the same vein as the Fatal Figures, loud, noisy, Pussy Galoresque Garage Rock.  The surprise is when Tracy gets up to the mic.  If you know Tracy, she is one of the sweetest nicest girls I have ever met and she commands the mic in these songs.  Singing a couple really poppy, hook driven punk rockers, my favorite being ‘Ovary Action’.

Great friggin demo and hopefully we will have this sucker out by the end of the year.

Record store day has come and gone and we have hundreds of people who keep asking us how to get a hold of the compilation because their local record store was not smart enought to carry it.  We saved a couple hundred for this purpose.

HOLLYWOOD - Love Child it out too!  This record kicks so much ass its unbelievable.  If you do not believe me, go to Big Neck's Sound Cloud page and listen to "Up All Night" or "Fingers."

Both of these records are for sale in the Specials link on under the store.  Click on it and buy both of them!

So tomorrow is Record Store Day and hopefully you are flocking to the store to pick up Big Neck Records RSD comp featuring The Livids (Eric Davidson from the New Bomb Turks), Xrays from the UK, Cheap Freaks from Dublin, and our very own Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. The record is friggin great.  The Livids start it off with a blistering punk rocker, “Stop Bleeding”.  The Xrays take the A-side home with their charged up guitar riffs in “Six Pack Style”.  We then start off the b-side with the Cheap Freaks new song acid tripping, garage scorcher,” Don’t Get Much Better Than This”, and finally Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb close out the record with another great punk rock with front woman Sal Go tearing up the vocals, “CraveCase”.

You may ask, how did this great record come to be?

I put up the Jack Jimmy Hoodlums demo on the IPhone App.  Download it from the store for FREE. Search Big Neck.

Over the years, since I put the Jack Jimmy Hoodlums song Loose Power number one on the Pain in the Big Neck Compilation CD, everyone has been asking who are those guys?  Where did they come from?  Why has there been no more from them?  Are there more recordings?

Here is the short version:

Best Freeby:

Haven’t received much swag from our sister labels or other labels out there recently, but I will tell you that the bands out there are sending us a bundle of cool stuff.  I present to you the best Freeby this week was sent in by The Sworn Liars from Germany!  They sent this cool long sleeve tee shirt to us (remember folks, I am a big guy so send XL or above).

Best Demo:

Best Demo of the week comes from The Screaming Demons of Trashville.  So when the Things from Dublin decided to part ways there were two different camps.  Robbie went to the Cheap Freaks and started putting out the best Garage Rock n Roll we have ever heard.  In fact I will attest that the Cheap Freaks will take over Europe and the U.S. within the next couple years. The rest of the Things decided to form a new band that would rediscover their love of punk rock by exploring their roots.  They built their sound around late 70’s punk rock from the Ramones to the Stooges to the Stiff Little Fingers.  Throwing this all together you get a mean fast punk garage rock sound that explodes out of your speakers.  This is a band that commands the rock but also seems to just be having a great time playing these songs and this type of music.

Check out a few videos they have up on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAx-uNBU2Xo

Line up:

Livids - Stop Bleeding

Xrays - Six Pack Style

Cheap Freaks - Don't Get Much Better Than This

Stop Worry and Love the Bomb - Cravecase

OUT SOON!

White Whale "Widow's Peak" on Big Neck Records

Got this one in from White Whale, a three piece from Buffalo, NY. I remember friends with bands in Buffalo, that was the big time, to play a show out there, maybe cross the border for an underage beer. The coolest. Haven't heard much from this part of the country in a while...way off my radar, and that's probably just because they aren't pressing seven inches probably except these guys.

Come on bands and labels, everyone is slacking on sending us cool rock n roll swag.  We need records to list and review.

Best Freeby: The Xrays Calendar - The Xrays took the time to create a cool calendar with Live Pics of the band and pics of their record covers. Pretty sweet.

Best Demo: Burnt Thrones Club

Burnt Thrones Club is a two piece rock n roll outfit from Berkeley and rock they do.  They play a loud noisy fast rock n roll with a lot of blues thrown in the mix.  This stuff is really good.  Sounds a lot like the early rock n roll releases that Big Neck Records put out early on in the labels lifestyle.  Stuff like Sagger, Bantam Rooster, and Blacks.  If we weren't so booked up with releases this year I would be all over this.

FATAL FIGURES-Caterwaul (Big Neck, LP)

Most of this band’s membership was in The Blowtops, who hammered out dirty, noisy garage blues churn. There’s still something of that here and they drag their songs through the muck pretty well. The songs that favor a spirited shuffle work best here—“Party Girl,” “Break Me” or “Blue Zed,”the latter song previously appearing on a 2011 single. It’s less-successful for the dragged-out “Wayne Bent” and “New God,” sounding like a musical interpretation of a hangover. Maybe not as much “VROOM” as their previous band (you should check out the Blowtops’ Blackstaticif your curiosity is piqued) but they have the right idea at times. (PO Box 8144, Reston, VA 20165, www.bigneckrecords.com)

PLATES-s/t (Big Neck, LP) Like Kim Phuc, Plates have been around for a few years, as well and and their self-titled LP is a volume-drenched head messer. Thick, huge slabs of guitar and, especially, bass (played by Biff from I Object/Brown Sugar/etc) stake out the band’s pummeling attack. I’m not sure about the point of calling one side “Flashing The Steel” and the other “Gang Shower,” but plenty of musical steel is flashed here (damn, that’s some crappy rock critiquery). This is the type of heavy, semi-abrasive rock that wouldn’t have been out of place on Amphetamine Reptile in the 90s. Nods to Hawkwind, with some of the whizzly guitar effects, and “Sentimental Jenny Jones Fodder” manages to be crushing and somewhat trippy at the same time. For pure punk-imbued raucousness, look no further than “Sociology 101” or “Under Suspect Tutelage.” Something tells me I’d need heavy-duty earplugs if I saw these guys live. I hope I get the chance. (Big Neck, PO Box 8144, Reston, VA 20195, www.bigneckrecords.com) – Al quint

FATAL FIGURES-Blue Zed/Alright (Big Neck, 7") Ugly, bluesy garage/slop with echo on the vocals for this pair of songs, one an original, the shufflin' "Blue Zed" and the flip being a cover of Pussy Galore's "Alright." The latter title sums things--'tis alright and nothing more. (PO Box 8144, Reston, VA 20195, www.bigneckrecords.com)

HOLLYWOOD-Stunts (Big Neck, CD) If you didn't tell me, I'd swear this was a new Mudhoney album, with the Mark Arm-type vocals, tongue in cheek lyrics and somewhat grungy, swampy guitar sound. It could even have been a new Monkeywrench disc, the sporadic collaboration with Mark and his Mudhoney compatriot Steve Turner, Tom Price from Gas Huffer and Tim Kerr. I've heard a new Mudhoney album in recent years and Hollywood's album is quite a bit better. Enough about those bands--let's get to Hollywood's rock 'n roll stew. The best song here is the raucous, rump-shaking "Toe-To-Toe," with a spacy instrumental break. The opener,"(Scary) Cemetery," borrows a lyrical line from the Ramones "Pet Semetary," and pounds along nicely on a sturdy bass-line, thunder-crack guitar and single note piano plink during the chorus. Bluesy, garagey, down 'n dirty rock done with simple, enjoyable aplomb. ( www.bigneckrecords.com)

WHITE WHALE-Widow's Peak/Rats In The Snow (Big Neck, 7") White Whale's previous demo and 7" were decent-enough but the two songs here don't immediately grab me. Frayed, semi-melodic punk working best on the higher-energy "Rats In The Snow," but something's missing, that extra spark to singe the ears. (PO Box 8144, Reston, VA 20195, www.bigneckrecords.com )

Best Freeby of the week:

Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb tee shirt - at the show on Saturday Sal gave me one of their new tee shirts and it's sweet.

Best Demo of the week:

Drugs Dragons - Tony Sagger sent me a CDR for Drugs Dragons II&I/II.  I have to admit off that bat that I am not a big fan of Drugs Dragons, I was a huge fan of Sagger and Tony's solo work.  I think I am just kind of sick of the 60's psych garage rock.  Even though Drugs Dragons takes that sound to a whole other level, a weird and heavy as hell whole other level, still not my cup of tee.  What I do love about this is the time and efffort Tony puts into any of his releases, look at this CDR:

He created the packaging by hand and drew/painted the cemetary scene, and then cut out the moon and stars so the CD would shine through.  Unbeleivable!  The time it took to do this is astronomical and its cool as hell.

HOLLYWOOD and Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb played this weekend at a Birthday party in DC.  Cory and I decided to stop by.  Great show at a bar called the Pinch.  Stop Worrying got on stage first and just had a grand old time of it.  As you can see by the photos they were wearing football helmets and begging people in the audience to throw things at them or hit them in the helmet.  Too funny.

Sal figured it out first that she had to lift the helmet to sing, Mike went through a couple songs till we yelled at him to fix it.  Still a great show and fun.

HOLLYWOOD was up next and belted out a great set of tunes from their upcoming "Love Child" LP and a bundle of brand new songs!

Best Freeby!

Ramma Lamma 7" from Dusty Medical

This is a great pop rock single put out by Dusty Medical.  2 songs of great pop punk rock created and fronted by a husband and wife team from Milawaukee.  The songs have a mild hint of glam rock crossed with a lot of pop rock.  A bit too much pop in there for me.  I still like tough rock n roll.  For what it is, it is really well done and of course its put out by our good friend Kevin Mistreater on Dusty Medical.

Best demo of the week!

Musk - from Rob of Tractor Sex Fatality.  This is Rob's new band after the Butcher Cover.  Musk sounds like a very stripped down Tractor Sex Fatality.  The music moves along like the band is bludgeoning their instruments on the stage and Rob's vocals give it a nice sick twist.  Rob's vocals are very distinct here as in they were in TSF, but in TSF he was covered up a lot by the music, but with this stripped down sound his vocals are right in front, disturbing you with every note.  It sounds great.  I enjoyed all 5 songs and did not want it to end.

Best freeby of the week:

Butcher Cover S/T LP - Rob from Tractor Sex Fatality and Butcher Cover and now Musk sent me a copy of the Butcher Cover LP.  It is something that scares the primal part of my being. If you like your punk rock/garage rock sounding like a crazely blown out freight train, going downhill as fast as possible, and slightly out of control, you must have this right now.  I do love Rob's vocals and the guitar just grinds out heavy riff after heavy riff, luckily the bass and drums keep carrrying the music forward at a nonstop pace.

Best Demo of the Week:

Undergirl from Philly - Girl fronted rock n roll/punk rock and do these girls know how to write great rock tunes?  Yes.  Real good straight up rock with an edge that leans towards the garage rock/punk rock.

Alright it’s been a while since I posted and I’ll be having a big batch of reviews coming soon as well as my best of 2012 list! So stick tight for that!

But! Before we get into the review for the highly anticipated debut LP by Fatal Figures we should give ya a little info about where this band came from…Fatal Figures is made up of three members of the now defunct Blowtops:  a high octane, extremely prolific beast that was a completely revered Buffalo, NY institution. Out of their ashes comes an uncompromising breath of fresh punk air.  Caterwaul is Fatal Figures debut LP (out on our good buds’ label Big Neck Records) and I know this has been in the works for close to two years. There are moments on Caterwaul that make me think of an amped up and bass-laden Bantam Rooster (“Television” and “Party Girl” most notably). The over the top drawly delivery mixed with the staggering guitar riffage harkens back to the Crypt Records catalogue in all the right ways. On the A-Side closer, “Wayne Bent”, you find the band grappling with lumbering, drugged out lows. The nonchalant vocal delivery is a perfect complement alongside the meandering bass and riveting drums that hold this dirge together.  But I think they really hit their stride on the B-Side. Most notably with the EXCELLENT cut, “New God”, where female and male vocals collide to great effect. Overall, this record will pummel you, albeit quickly….very quickly. The whole thing is a flash of wild punk aggression that’s over after nine short bursts…basically you’ll want to catch this while you can…before it flies by and yr stuck on yr couch drunk and listening to the blank hum of a stereo cranked too loud with no tunes flowin’ outta it.

STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB: Haunted EP: 7” DC’s Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb have awesome dual male/female vocals and are an ideal example of a mainline, straightforward formula working incredibly well. A lot of male/female vocal bands suffer from one singer outshining the other, but both voices here are similarly snotty, complementing one another nicely. Maybe I’m a softie, but it’s records like this one that make me want to go out and shake negative scenesters who think that there isn’t amazing music being created today. Even the most jaded listener would have to concede how darn energetic and magical this 7” is. We’re talking pure punk perfection here. –Art Ettinger (Big Neck, bigneckrecords.com)

This record alternates between lurching, tectonic AmRep power-slude, and kinetic, direct, hardcore punk – often within the same song.   Vocals are up-front and in your face, channeling Henry Rollins, mostly Damaged era, but with elements of the first ROLLINS BAND LP.  This is not a bad thing.  The guitarist is a little more experimental with effects than on your typical hardcore record, giving this a slight psychedelic flair.  Good stuff, hope to hear more. Reviews from 5 zines on Blues Zed!

Here is just one from Ripple Effect:

Fatal Figures - Blue Zed b/w Alright
Released earlier this year on Big Neck Records, the Fatal Figures are made up of Aaron, Tracy, and Scott from the Blowtops. After a decade of plowing one gushy vein of garage rock horror show after another with the Blowtops, the remaining members decided to move on and explore new territory.  While that sounds like something dramatic, in reality the Fatal Figures are doing what they've always done best.  This is pure garage punk-death rock n roll.  We got amped up, creeped-out Cramps here, some serious Pussy Galore and a whole lotta fun.
"Blue Zed" is the highlight here with Aaron Adduci being a hypnotizing front man.  I don't know what this cat takes before a show, but lock it up, you don't want that getting loose in public.  His vocals are a sputtered death moan of Boris Karloff meets The Sonics hysteria.  The bottom end of this song is purely subsonic.  An intense, mesmerizing listen. "Alright" is a Pussy Galore cover and really holds place until these cats dawn the creepshow punk and blast out their next original.   Released on blood red vinyl, of course.
