I have been trying to figure out what to release for Big Neck’s 100th record.  This is a big milestone in the label’s career and I wanted something to reflect the moment.  I went through a lot of different ideas like maybe we will repress the Baseball Furies first 3 LPs in a box set with new covers and added material, or let’s do a compilation of all the Big Neck bands from back in the day with new songs recorded at Jim Diamond’s, or let’s find a new kick ass group to launch the label for the next 15 years.  A lot of ideas came and went and then the answer fell into my lap…

It is an amazing DC punk record.  Filled with snotty punk, great guitar hooks and killer Female/Male vocals.

Go to the store and buy!

Fire Retarded - Scroggz Manor LP/CD

Fire Retarded is a good garage rock / punk band from Madison, WI.  One of the things I like about them is they're able to inject a healthy dose of hyper punk energy into their songs and not get bogged down by garage rock cliches.  Also, every song is catchy as fuck.  The record has a perfectly fuzzy recording that suites the whole thing perfectly.  They remind me of the kind of band you wanted to see opening up for JAY REATARD, as opposed to the fucking posers who usually opened up for him.  Go ahead and get it.  I feel like this one will really grow on me over time. But I must say, '70's NYC punk influence is alive and well, still pulsing through the veins of SONNY VINCENT's work.  Songs "Jealousy," "Supernova," and "Corner Stone" are as good as anything the TESTORS could dish out.  Vincent's voice still as snotty and raw as it was in his twenties. Solid hooks, fast and anxious delivery - it's good.

I  like when punk still has that homemade feel, if things are too polished it can lose the raw sound that can only happen in one take under less than perfect conditions. Like those home recordings on a four track in the bedroom, if you try to artificially recreate that feel you’ll immediately know it. Something will be different. You can hear it right away with the X-Rays, these guys pulled themselves together just long enough to write a single with alcohol fueling the subject matter and recording session.
