It has been over a week since the Big Neck Fest 2014 in Buffalo, NY and I think it is time to review.  Before we dive into Day 1 I want to extend my thanks out to Malik Von Saint who set all of this up.  Without him, Buffalo would have been without this festival for another few years.  He organized the nights, took care of the door, governed the money, and got those bands rolling on time (no small feat). So again THANKS MALIK!

Let’s start with Day 1, Thursday June 12...

Record Store Day Compilation - How and Why

So tomorrow is Record Store Day and hopefully you are flocking to the store to pick up Big Neck Records RSD comp featuring The Livids (Eric Davidson from the New Bomb Turks), Xrays from the UK, Cheap Freaks from Dublin, and our very own Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. The record is friggin great.  The Livids start it off with a blistering punk rocker, “Stop Bleeding”.  The Xrays take the A-side home with their charged up guitar riffs in “Six Pack Style”.  We then start off the b-side with the Cheap Freaks new song acid tripping, garage scorcher,” Don’t Get Much Better Than This”, and finally Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb close out the record with another great punk rock with front woman Sal Go tearing up the vocals, “CraveCase”.

You may ask, how did this great record come to be?

Actually, it was all Eric Davidson’s idea.  Last year at the Big Neck Records fest in Baltimore the Livids destroyed the show with a blazing, balls to the wall set of ramped up punk rock.  I have known Eric for quite some time via the New Bomb Turks coming through Buffalo and playing at my bars, but mostly through friends like Odie Wilson from the Baseball Furies.  Right after the set, I was having a beer with Eric and begging him to release a record for the band.

Now, what is great about Eric, other than being  an amazing writer, and one of this generation’s punk rock icons he is the nicest guy in the world who absolutely loves music.  We had a long night of bands that night and I don’t think Eric missed seeing a single one of them.

So, when I approached him about doing the record, he looked at me with one eye, gave me the Popeye look and said, “that’s a good idea, we will be recording soon.  Maybe we can do a split with that first band, Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb?”  I bought him another beer and said, “whatever you want to do, we are in!”

Before he left the show, we gave Eric a bundle of Big Neck’s recent swag.

Flash Forward a couple months, Eric wrote a couple articles about the Cheap Freaks and I decided to call him and remind him of the record. He immediately dove into how much he liked the Cheap Freaks album and the Stop Worrying single, but then started discussing how we were doing the new single for the newly reformed Xrays (Empty Records punk rock legends).  He basically said, wouldn’t it be great if we did a compilation 7” with the Xrays, Cheap Freaks and Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb?  Yes it would.

It was a great idea.  That or Eric gave out all the Livids songs already.  What I love about this is that every fan who buys this for the Livids will get a full taste and slap in the face of the sound of Big Neck Records.  We have never let go of the idea of tough punk rock n roll with great hooks.  No hippy psyche rock reminding you of the 60’s.

So, compilation created.  Record store day was our release date and thanks to United Record Pressing we made it.

Go buy it, you will not regret it in anyway.
