Ok, so I had the band name and the record title reversed for a little while before coming to my senses. The Big Neck label outta Northern, VA (ie: the DC area) has been releasing some real righteous stuff as of late and I’m finally beginning to take notice. Take this quartet, for instance. Sal, Mike, Curt and Nathan play these 14 songs as if their life depended on it (who knows, maybe beer and pizza was promised to them at the end of the recording session). They recorded with Jim Diamond at Ghetto Recorders and that dude has a talent of getting the best out of bands. These guys go right for the jugular on the opening tune “Love Your Guns” and don’t take a breath until the final cut, “Let’s Get Hurt.” Of the twelve songs in between a few of my favorites include “Soupline for Annihilation,” “Not Another Day,” “Lawyer Up” and “Intensity in Tent Cities” (ha ha ha ha ). If you dig other howlers like New Bomb Turks or Electric Frankenstein (Jay Reatard, too) then trust me, you’ll be ok with this.

MRR reviews of HOLLYWOOD and RSD compilation

HOLLYWOOD - "Love Child" LP

From the home of the late great Edith Massey comes some brattey '70s inspired punk rock.  At they're best moments they remind me of RED CROSS or GREEN RIVER.  Almost a Seattle grunge throwback at times with shades of 60s punk and 70s glam with one of those singers that I picture with his shirt off, bleedng track marks and who ends every song line with a cat howling eeeeooowwwww! PRETTY GOOD. (RO)

V/A - "Big Neck Record Store Day Compilation" EP

One track each by LIVIDS, XRAYS, CHEAP FREAKS and STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB. LIVIDS come right out of the gate with a driving rager that's got great guitar and just doesn't stop.  It just pulls you in.  XRAYS continue with another one that has got a great guitar sound and is delivered with a great sense of urgency.  I can't imagine the second side will match the intensity of these two.  Turns out I may be wrong.  CHEAP FREAKS slow things down a bit, but they don't slow down the intensity.  SWALTB close things out with a female fronted number, which also includes what sounds like a tamborine...Jezus. And it's got some wicked guitar.  Honestly, this is one of the best compilation EPs I've heard in ages. (KK)
