If you bought issue #377 of MRR you know that they reviewed all of our last 4 releases at once.  So, we will put them up here, one for each day.

First off is the NV's with Trust Fun Suicide EP

This EP gives us 3 songs of tried and true garage punk.  Poppy, fast, melodic, and sharp.  Just like your favorite MUFFS song.  These guys don't give you anything new; you've probably heard bands play songs just like these ones many times before.  But I don't think this is the kind of music meant for someone looking for something new.  It's meant for people that already know what they want and they want more of it!  And if you are looking for catchy pub-punk with attitude this will be something you like.

Fatal Figures are the members of The Blowtops latest, a band I'm just getting to know also on Big Neck Records. These guys are making it happen in way way western New York where it's winter six months a year. Buffalo was the big city we would occasionally drive to to either go across the border to drink in Canada or go to Darien Lake and see a huge show. I played with someone from Buffalo who would tell me about all kinds of cool shit that was happening and I imagined living there one day. Their latest builds on that garage intensity with some hardcore influences while keeping that raw, live sound.

Sonny Vincent - 'Cyanide Consommé' (Big Neck Records)

The master of stealth releases is at it again. You pretty much have to be like a CIA agent or grand master at MI5 to be able to keep on top of the releases by Sonny Vincent which is something of a pain when the guy tends to release faultless records: a category that his new album falls into; then you find out he's only gone and released a couple of 7" singles on labels you can't find and by the time you track 'em down you have to pay way over the odds on discogs or some other unscrupulous website which kinda bums me out.

Well, I know that there is another brand new album waiting to drop that features the likes of Rat Scabies but that I know isn't quite ready and when I got notified this album was out I was hoping that it would be that one, but alas when 'Cyanide Consommé' drops and I check the players out it's not to be: but it is the most recent album he's slipped out there. A few of the track I recognise from the No Balls Records release 'Ultramafic' but only a few of them. I also know from the song of the same name as this CD  it was written sometime in 2001 so fuck knows where this bad boy was done but, hey, that's not the point, right? Right!

Without further ado 'James Brown's Evil Son' literally rips through the speakers in time honoured Vincent fashion with guest saxophone from Stooge Steve Mackay. It's classic blistering Sonny Vincent. The guitars are in the red and they are ripping the speakers a new one from the opening note to the final.

'Snort My Snot' is a snarling dog of a track but 'Part 2 Screw You' is more laid back and smouldering if I might be so bold. I do love the tone Sonny gets on his guitar - it might not be as fine a noise as, say, Brian James manages to get when ringing the neck of his chosen instrument but it sure as shit isn't far behind. Even the solo sounds controlled and tempered - the man is showing restraint and I like it!

Having said that 'Corner Stone' comes in on its heels like a bull in a china shop and proceeds to kick the shit out of the listener with absolutely zero finesse but some bass guitar fretwork that can only be described as thunderous - please take a bow James Garner and take a break, you've earned it.

By the time 'Canine' is well underway I'm thinking that, sure, there is always a healthy tip of the hat to The Stooges from Mr Vincent and he's always had a Stooge or two represent on his records, but if this song was the lead track on, say, the new Iggy and The Stooges record the mainstream media would be all over it hailing it as the second coming. Sonny Vincent gets his groove well and truly on.

That rabid dog is back on the heartbreak ballad 'Jealousy'. Oh yes, right - like this was gonna be a slowie heartbreaker: it's another 100% full throttle rip snorting rocker and guitar players everywhere should be rejoicing at the sheer audacity on display from Sonny and Stephen Grujic for their six string abuse - mag-fuckin-nificent!

I must take my hat off to Sonny Vincent because I'm wracking my brain here trying to think of a shitty album he's put his name to and, you know what I don't think there is one from The Testors to Shotgun Rationale and his Bob Stinson collaboration on 'Cow Milking Music' through his solo output the guy is fucking amazing and whilst it might not be as good as 'P.I.N.S' or 'Switchblade Summer' or 'Parallax In Wonderland', nor is it 'Good Dogs Die Young' or a 'Bizzaro Hymns', it's still pretty much better than most other records you're going to hear this year and all it's done is whet my appetite for the next one which should be hot on the heels of this one.

So keep you ears to the ground, kids and it won't be too long and if you do happen to miss it dropping into the public domain fear not, I'm on it and will shout from the rooftops once more: Sonny fucking Vincent has a new record out and you should buy it because it's a killer release crammed full of fourteen noisey, punk rock attitude, rock and rolla, motherfucking songs! Now thats 'Cyanide Consommé' pretty much in a nut shell!

Now to find me a copy of that 'Totally Fucked' 7" vinyl. Get me HQ on the phone and bring MI5 up to speed, we're going record hunting.
