The Sanctuary was a nightclub designed to fill a certain niche in Buffalo's society. Till the day The Sanctuary opened there were no bars catering toward the heavy metal, punkish, freaky, crowd. So, it's conceptualization was completely for this group of people, and it worked very well. Too well in fact, oddly enough it attracted not just the expected crowd, but people from all walks of life, busness men, city officials, yuppies, older adults, etc. Curiosity knows no bounds.

The Sanctuary was designed to rely upon entertainment as it's means of attracting a crowd. If you were there, you came for a reason, otherwise you most likely ran screaming from the horror. After all Sanctuary's motto was... "333 Franklin Street, half way to HELL!!!"

THURSDAY PUNK ROCK THURSDAYS Free, live punk bands along with DJ Aaron spinning the best of garage and punk rock tunes.
FRIDAY HEAVY FRIDAYS Nowhere else is the party this wild with a DJ who spins all heavy and all hard.
SATURDAY LIVE MUSIC Live bands ranging from local acts to national headliners play every Saturday night.
SUNDAY LIVE HEAVY METAL/HARDCORE Every Sunday night live heavy metal and hardcore bands. Shows are all ages.


The popularity of the fettish nights soared through the roof, packing in record crowds every week. Following right behind them was the live music scene that THE SANCTUARY was creating in the conservative Buffalo culture. Much to the shagrin of many, this music scene spawned many famous garage and punk bands. Local bands like THE BLOWTOPS, THE VINNY BABARINO EXPERIENCE, and THE BASEBALL FURIES all came out of this scene. National acts like Bantum Rooster and Nashville Pussy stopped by on their tours to play shows. In fact to this day Nashville Pussy had one of the most messed up, wacked out shows ever at Sanctuary.

Finally, out of this menagerie was spawned the greatest garage, punk, rock and roll label ever.....

Alas, even though the crowds were enormous and the patrons love for the place abundant, THE SANCTUARY was closed on June 4, 1998.
