the Halfways
"(She's a) Heart Attack" |
Third 7" by these
vigilante bunch of hardhitting troubleshooters from
Virginia. After releasing The Baseball Furies, The Blowtops,
The Blacks,....Big Neck Records found The Halfways in
the endless search for fucked up punk and R'n'R bands.
The sound which The Halfways belt out is earthshakin'
and aimed for killing at first hit. They haven't been
stopping their hellish ride into destruction and confusion
ever since their debut 7" was released. And what's
more their sound has been skilled and turned into a
fine set of rollin' wheels, which are mighty greedy
to cruise the wylde sides of R'n'Roll life. For these
4 tracks ex-Devil Dog and current runabout engineer/producer
Steve Baise was brought in. He took the band into a
slipstream of frenzied, boistrous rampage, which does
The Halfways more than justice, because that's the overall
feel one gets from absorbing their killer punkrock.
On "Ain't Much To Do" they get additional
lead guitar by CandySnatcher, Matt Odietus. These 5
sleazebags have based their firm sound on solid pieces
of Dead Boys, a vicious shot of Pagans and a fine set
of late 70's NYC punk and were able to come up with
a fine slab of sonic mayhem which should do no harm
in between The Candy Snatchers, Electric Frankenstein,
The Mud City Manglers, The Baseball Furies, The Weaklings.......

Produced by former Devil
Dog Steve Baise. This is a lot like The Morning Shakes
or the Nerves. Plain rock and roll, fast and loud. -

Good stuff, one of the
singles that passed the taste test this month. Rough
rock and roll, twin guitars, a singer that can spit
out a lyric with the best of 'em. I hear the early New
Bomb Turks in here if you're in need of a comparison,
but the Halfways deserve attention (and an LP) on their
own merits. Dig. - Maximum Rock'n'Roll

No expense was spared
with this baby. The sleeve is made of the thickest cardstock
I've seen in quite some time. We'd love some of that
shit for the cover of our mag, but we cant afford it.
I don't know anything about these guys, but they do
play straight ahead snotty punk rock. - Multiball

Produced by ex-Devil
Dog Steve Baise with a guest appearance by Matt Odietus
from The Candy Snatchers. This 7" pretty much sounds
like the band REALLY likes The Candy Snatchers. (Who
can blame'em) Not bad, mid-tempo three chord rock. -

Big Neck Records, a
rising east coast garage indie label, has unleashed
yet another fine slab of rocknroll vinyl. After blasting
Baseball Furies, Blacks, Blowtops, and Primate Five
singles into circulation, Big Neck has quickly gained
a reputation as a purveyor of quality garage rocknroll(a'
la ESTRUS RECORDS). And The Half-Ways will only sweeten
the pot! The bands new 4 song EP, is a raunchy, furious,
gritty rocknroll platter. Sticking to the basics, The
Halfways use a two guitar blast and a smashing rythm
section to achieve optimum results. Their fast, trashy
rocknroll is hardly original, but that hardly matters!
The band plays with energy and fury, kicking out the
kind of bad-ass punk jams that put The New Bomb Turks,
Humpers, and Weaklings on the rocknroll map. The scintillating,
catchy, exciting, great title track is certainly the
EP's hi-light, but the Halfways never lag. This Steve
Baise produced single doesn't cover new ground, but
it covers familiar territory with real fervor! There
will always be a place in this world for top-flight
trashy punk! - New Wave

These guys have some
friends in hi, or should I say low places. The last
release these guys put out had Matt Odietus of The Candy
Snatchers producing (he plays lead on one of the tracks
here too). Steve Baise is the producer now and I guess
he takes these boys up a notch. What you have here is
Devil Dogs styled RnR, turned way up! All the tunes
are great, I'm waiting for an album which I hope comes
out soon, keep up the good work boys! - the Kings
of Trash R'n'R

There is less skronk
and more punk on this slab. The title track clips along
with straight up bar chord punk rock sans pop influences.
"What I Want" is slower but does not suck.
It even has two part vocals that don't bite. The songwriting
and arrangement does not break any ground, but these
guys have put in their time listening to all the necessary
influences. The Baise production can only help. - Trash

Just by the sound of
their name, I was only expecting half-assed RnR, but
my ass was properly whipped! This seems like a side
project of Matt(guitar/Candy Snatchers) Odietus, but
his involvement is down to just helpin' out on guitar
on one track on this 7". Really stripped down,
burning guitars, and better vocals than you'd expect.
A great blast of early NBT explosive power that's winning
me over before the end of the last side. Track this
down and smash this shit alla the way. - Horizontal
