Seger Liberation Army
"Heavy Music" |
Yeah! I egged Blob Seger's yacht.
What about it?!? I've heard a ton of reasons why all
the Seger stuff pre "Beautiful Loser" is out
of print but a favorite of mine is that him and Punch
Andrews, his manager for the past 58 years (who it just
so happens is also Kid Rock's manager these days), HATE
all the guys who played in the band back then so if
the recordings are not available there's no sales and
so those guys can't collect a royalty. Pretty sneaky
huh? It sucks cuz Seger is known for being the big fat
ass Santa looking guy who sings "Old Time Rock-n-Roll"
but there was a time when he sounded tough and ROCKED!
Put on something like "Down Home" from the
first Seger System album and try to tell me it wouldn't
sound right on the In The Red label circa now. Members
of the Dirtbombs and the New Bomb Turks provide a fat
groove behind the wine lovin' preaching of the Rev.
Tom Potter as he leads his store front church gospel
choir of Marcie and Jason Von Bondie cracklin' through
speakers from the beaches to the streets. When Seger
sang about the Big Bad Beat coming on the radio in "Heavy
Music" he wasn't thinking about his truck or the
Mackinac Bridge. He was talkin' about goin' deeper and
gettin' down. Lemme tell ya-the Seger Liberation Army
can feel it! Can you? "Chain Smokin'" is on
the flip and it's dates even farther back to old Bob's
days in the Last Herd (who's songs would've appeared
on Norton's "Hideout" collection if it wasn't
for a "request by the artist" to keep 'em
off it). This record will squash them puny Briefs sentiments
like a nuclear powered flyswatter. - Smashing

Ah, the oft misunderstood Bobby Seegz,
as interpreted by some of rock-n-roll's finest current
heroes. Thomas Potter, JImmy Diamond, Fred Beldin, Jim
Weber and mista Patrick Patano. If you even think ya
gots a clue about Detroit rock then you're bound to
know that at one time Bob Seger was crankin out some
of the best sounds you could get yer greasy lil' fingers
on. I'm talking pure d-town gold. I'm pretty sure that
lil' scientoligist faggot Tom Cruise never owned or
even heard any of it, but these fellas are bringin'
it back like nobody else could. Who else could possibly
handle the heavy vocal duties of B.S. than the great
TeePee? Know What? You've heard it on these pages before,
but the Briefs suck. This is great. Get it Now! - Horizontal

Says here on the back cover, about
the tunes: "You WILL dig 'em", so it's not
like I have much of a choice. SLA (Hey!) is a supergroup
comprised of 5 trash rock vets from such seminal gut-bucket
garage punkers and R&R howlers as The Come Ons,
Bantam Rooster, New Bomb Turks, The Clutters, the Dirtbombs,
and El Smasho. With such a formidable lineage, you'd
expect a king-size wallop of Big Beat rock and roll
action, and brother, you get it. A-side "Heavy
Music" is a monster, a wallop of 60's fuzz and
roll that sounds like "Mony, Mony" blasting
out of the MC5's stacks, and the b-side is a sleazy
psyche-rawk track with Cherry Valance-styled high pitched
"Yeahs!" and some seriously meaty, circular
riffin'. The boys were absolutely right-I do dig 'em,
and you're gonna dig 'em too. Very few supergroups live
up to the sum of their parts, but Seger Liberation Army
sound like a crack commado unit of rock and fuckin'
roll unto themselves. This one's a classic. Go get it.

It's a Detroit superstar cast doing
Bob Seger covers - What the hell else do you want? Tommy
Potter (lead vocals) from Bantam Rooster/Dirtbombs may
be no Seger, but he gives the soul justice. Jim Diamond
from Ghetto Recorders/Dirtbombs blasts guitars and organs.
Fred Beldin of El Smasho fills in with more guitars.
Jim Weber of the New Bomb Turks lays down the bass,
and Pat Pantano of the Dirtbombs plays drums. Did I
tell you that it was a Detroit Superstar cast or what?
Nothing is really as pathetic as a bunch of drunks who
get together and record these two covers "Heavy
Music" and "Chain Smoking." Semms like
a good idea and with Jim Diamond owning one of the best
studios in the country, it sounds top notch. What's
great is that Big Neck put this out. So where is the
LP? - Punk Planet |

Not sure what Bob Seger needs to
be liberated from besides the 80s and 90s but that's
exactly what this single does, covering two numbers
that I have to assume (with very little actual knowledge
on the subject of Seger's career output) are from the
late 60s/early 70s days when his band probably opened
for the MC5, whose sound was a slightly raunchier version
of the white R & B present here. In other words,
MC5 era Detroit rock-n-roll from the hand of the youth.

...a tribute to the
king of mid-60s Detroit white-boy soul. There seems
to be a revival in the magic of old Bob Seger music
these days and I ain't complaining either!!! All the
young kids have been spinning Seger at the clubs...
just goes to show you that there are some people who
are REALLY INTO FUCKING out there and aren't afraid
to let the world know it!!! Cuz I'll tell ya baby, you
could really fuck good and hard to selected Seger System
cuts... nasty sexy too!!! I'm glad the kids are hip
to SEGER... more teenage sex and drug use is what I
promote!!! Anyway about this record; It's basically
an all star single featuring my favorite session man
and bass player, Jim Diamond, who I think rules!!! This
record doesn't have the power of the original numbers,
but the spirit is there... I mean how can you give somebody
as great as Bob Seger the "perfect" blowjob
anyway? - Maximum Rock'n'Roll |

If you just can't
get enough Bob Seger music or would like to hear another
band's spin on some of his more potent early tunes,
the SLA are your ticket to good times. Detroit recording
engineer to the stars, JIm Diamond, is part of this
tribute to the ramblin' gamblin man. He is joined by
Thomas Potter, Frederic Beldin, James Weber and Patrick
Pantano, who are moonlighting from such bands as the
Dirtbombs, Bantam Rooster, and the New Bomb Turks. The
two tracks here, "Heavy Music" and "Chain
Smokin'," are given a vibrant and respectful treatment.
The modern edge works fine and points up the fact that
Bob wrote some rather timeless tunes in his prime. I'd
be curious to see what these whippersnappers do with
some of my favorite ancient seger nuggets. This is probably
jus a one off project, though. - Garage and

You WILL dig this.
The SLA is Tom Potter, Diamond Jim Diamond, and other
garage no-goodniks (including another Dirtbomb and a
New Bomb Turk) raiding the vaults of one Mr. Bob Seger.
And not Silver Bullet Band shit either, we’re
going back-back-back to the late Sixties Bob Seger and
the Last Heard days when he was still a little known
garage doofus releasing records on local Michigan labels.
Here, "Heavy Music" is backed with "Chain
Smokin’", two prime slices of Detroit garage
fuzz. The SLA turn in great performances on both tracks,
in that Ghetto Recorders sound decked out with ample
amounts of Dirtbombs-fuzz kinda way. It honestly rocks
like all hell, and there’s already another volume
in the works at the Big Neck hit factory which is supposedly
even better than this. And if you’re like me and
think everything Tom Potter touches is gold then get
this superior slab ASAP. - Blankgeneration.com |

If the sound of Bob
Seger tunes wants to make you put a silver bullet in
your head, your not alone. The only people who could
possible make a Seger song not only bearable but rock-n-rollin
is this Holy order of garage GODs aka Tom Potter and
Jim Diamond (greasy spoon) form Bantam Rooster/Dirtbombs,
Jim Weber from the New Bomb Turks/Gaunt (R.I.P. Jerry
Wick), Fred Beldin from El Smasho and The Clutters,
and Patrick Pantano from the Come Ons and The Dirtbombs.

The single I was
looking forward to most in 2002 didn't come out until
the very last weeks of the year. but the wait was worth
it. You might have heard about this band, but lemme
fill you in: SLA features members of THE COME ONS, DIRTBOMBS,
and NEW BOMB TURKS doing (suprise) BOB SEGER covers.
The result is suprisingly great and more than a little
funny. I'm not a Seger guy, but these undeniably cool
folks have managed to breathe life into an undeniably
uncool has been. With folks form those bands aboard,
how could it suck? - AMP (American Music Press) |

Big Neck Records
latest 7 inch is “Heavy Music” by the Seger
Liberation Army. Now this is a side project of members
of some great bands, a super group if you will. It’s
Thomas Potter of Batam Rooster/ Dirtbombs on vocals,
Jim Diamond of the Dirtbombs on guitar and organ, Fred
Beldin of El Smasho/the Clutters on guitar, Jim Weber
of the New Bomb Turks on Bass and Patrick Pantano of
the Come On/ Dirtbombs on drums. They do two songs by
Bob Seger & The Last Heard. These songs are from
ten years before Seger broke it big. This was recorded
at Jim Diamond’s Ghetto Recorders so of course
it sounds great. Side A contains “Heavy Music.”
This is a soul rave-up that will get all the ladies
dancin’ and I’m sure would get the James
Brown seal of approval. It has a smokin’ organ
solo and I always love those handclaps. Side B contains
“Chain Smokin’.” What can I say, this
is another funky number that had me dancin’ in
my underwear. I really love the background vocals on
this one. It got me thinkin’ “Soooooul Train.”
Who’d a thunk, Bob Seger songs could sound this
good? Will this super group make another record? Who
knows? Just get this one and enjoy what we’ve
got; a great single. - Cyclops |

This is Lester Bang's
dream band!! - Rocktober |

What would happen if some of the
drunks from THE DIRTBOMBS, BANTAM ROOSTER, NEW BOMB
TURKS and THE COME ONS would get along together to
record cover versions from the BOB SEGER SYSTEM? This
record, indeed!! Yes, that's true, some of the best
musicians from the Detroit-Chicago-Columbus area got
together to release two soulful, garagey, organ fuelled
numbers from the great BOB SEGER. Recorded in a drunken
blur by JIm Diamond in that '90s rock'n'roll mecca
called Ghetto Recorders this is a fatal addition for
your record collection.... hell I had to switch the
turntable off to prevent my hair growing afro!!! BIG
NECK strikes again... and if you dig the modern lo-fi/blues/garage
way, it's better you start going that way too!! -

I think this portion of the press
sheet sums it up best, "They were drunk…
and it seemed like a good idea at the time."
I'm sure it did. And it made for a pretty good 7"
too. - Carbon 14

Bob Seger has a lot to answer for,
but his early Detroit days continue to inspire a legion
of Seger apologists. The SLA, featuring a New Bomb
Turk, producer Jim Diamond, and other luminaries,
make a great case for the apologists. Both of these
cuts are heavy, psychedelic r'n'b - lot's of muscle
and big hooks. If only Chevy had chosen one of these
songs for their tv ads. - Go Metric

Seger Liberation Army
"2+2=?" |
Tom Potter, Jim Diamond and gang continue
raiding through Bob Segers´musical vaults with
the second instalment in their Seger Liberation Army-story.
"Heavy Music" was okay, but this one is even
better. "2+2=?" is just an amazing catchy
stormer and "East Side Story" is a dark and
psychedelic 60´s garagepunker with cool organ
and a riff that sticks like glue. I always thought good
´ole Bob S. was some boring wanker but hey, I
guess I too have yet to discover the genious behind
these songs! But heck, what I really wan´t to
hear is the Detroit City Council- album that Pottery
Tom has been concentrating on. - Savage

…fuckin’ eh, another tribute
to Bob by the other SLA… the Detroit band!! Looks
like a second in their series of way old BOB SEGER tunes…
when he was a part of the SYSTEM and the LAST HEARD,
all covered with grace by Mr. Jim Diamond and friends!!!
Very smooth vocal work by Tom Potter (ex-Bantam Rooster,
ex homosexual lover of Mr. Eddy Budds, Jr.) …and
one dirty sweet production job as well!!! If you never
got to taste the powerful cock and huge, wet and swollen
balls of BOBBY-BOY SEGER back when your mother was balling
him, here’s something to breast feed your children
with. - Maximum Rock'n'Roll
